Designed in partnership with the creative hub that is Birch community, ours are no ordinary writing retreats.

Set over two and half days, The Writers’ School at Birch will examine some of the core skills essential to good writing. We’ll study examples from well-known novels to help bring the theory to life and stimulate discussion and debate. But most importantly, we will be writing: starting and building upon a piece of work across the days so that everyone will leave with a scene, a chapter or an outline. A bridge to the writers’ life beyond the workshop. On the final morning, we’ll welcome an industry expert for a Q&A and offer each writer a one-to-one with a tutor to share work, discuss progress and next steps. The sessions will be rigorous but easygoing. Productive as well as sociable.

But it’s not all work. The days will include yoga, walks, meditation and bread making. An early cocktail hour to get the creative juices flowing, and afternoon tea, if you fancy.

In the evenings, writers are free to sample everything that the hotel has to offer, from a swim in the Lido to a treatment or a movie in the screening room. Grab a rug for a drink on the lawn, book a barbecue or enjoy fabulous bars and fine dining. Or if you’d prefer, crack on with your writing in our dedicated space at The Hub, Birch’s co-working area. Time to refocus and release.
